LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A Michigan teachers union promoted a lesson plan for teachers that promoted NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and discussions on the terms “police brutality,” “racism,” and “transgender” while teaching students about the Olympics.
The Michigan chapter of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) sent out a Feb. 9 email that stated, “Check out ShareMyLesson’s Collection on the History of the Olympics [sic] Games.”

The lesson plan for grades 3-5 includes a link to a book titled “Enough! 20 Protesters Who Changed America.”
The AFT lesson plan page links to a page from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) that features the book as its book of the month. The ADL states, “This collection of featured books is from Books Matter: The Best Kid Lit on Bias, Diversity and Social Justice. The books teach about bias and prejudice, promote respect for diversity, encourage social action and reinforce themes addressed in education programs of A World of Difference® Institute.”
The book describes Kaepernick as taking a knee for black people. While playing with the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem during a NFL game in 2016 to protest police brutality. He wore socks with police pigs on them that year, his final season in the NFL.
Kaepernick compared the NFL draft to a slave auction in October 2021. Since making that comparison, Kaepernick has said he would still like to play in the NFL. Kaepernick made $51.15 million just in his NFL salary during his career that spanned from 2011 to 2016.
The lesson plan also encourages teachers to lead discussions with the students on terms such as “racism,” “transgender,” “slavery,” “union,” and “police brutality.”
The teaching resources also promotes student activism via websites such as “Sneakers and Prejudice: Letters to Challenge Bias.”
