LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Owning a home has become harder for many Michigan families, so lawmakers are stepping in with a new plan they say could help turn the tide.
Lawmakers from both parties launched a new housing package Feb. 17 aimed at lowering costs and encouraging more home construction across the state—an effort supporters say is long overdue as many first-time buyers remain priced out of the market.

State Reps. Joe Aragona (R-Clinton Township) and Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) are expected to lead the rollout. Aragona chairs the House Regulatory Reform Committee, which will likely review the legislation, while Grant previously oversaw housing issues as chair of a House housing subcommittee.
Overall, the legislation would loosen local zoning restrictions by allowing duplexes and accessory dwelling units in more areas, limiting minimum lot and home size requirements, and capping parking rules that can increase construction costs.
“We need the people of Michigan to have a roof over their heads,” Rep. Grant said, “A lot of the local laws around housing make that impossible.”
