LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Attorney General Dana Nessel is pushing U.S. lawmakers to reject the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, claiming that the legislation would “unlawfully nationalize election administration, impose sweeping new barriers to voter registration, and disenfranchise millions of eligible Americans.”

Nessel joined 12 attorneys general in asking the U.S. Senate to reject the proposed voter ID law.

A “power grab.”

Nessel and the coalition say the legislation “is an unprecedented power grab that would strip states of their long-recognized authority over elections and dismantle modern voter registration systems that voters and election officials across the country rely on.”

Michigan’s municipal election entities have reported findings where non-residents have voted in Michigan elections.

In January, Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini reported his office found 14 non-citizens registered to vote at some point.

“Currently, someone who applies for a driver’s license automatically is registered to vote unless they choose to decline,” the Macomb County Clerk’s Office stated in a press release. “If someone is presented with a voter registration form, there is a checkbox for citizenship. If the checkbox is checked ‘yes’ for ‘I am a United States citizen,’ the form is processed even if the applicant is not a U.S. citizen or doesn’t understand the question. Unlike some states, Michigan does not currently use a federal citizenship database or systematic federal verification to confirm the status at the time of registration.”

“Horrible, disingenuous CHEATERS.”

In April 2025, the Michigan Secretary of State’s office said it found 15 individuals who are not U.S. citizens but voted in the presidential election last November in Michigan.

President Donald Trump has been adamant about passing the voter ID law.

“We cannot let the Democrats get away with NO VOTER I.D. any longer,” Trump posted on his Truth Social account. “These are horrible, disingenuous CHEATERS. They have all sorts of reasons why it shouldn’t be passed, and then boldly laugh in the backrooms after their ridiculous presentations. If it weren’t such a serious matter, it would be considered a TOTAL JOKE! No Voter I.D. is even crazier, and more ridiculous, than Men playing in Women’s Sports, Open Borders, or Transgender for Everyone.”
