LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michiganders clearly had a lot to complain about in 2025. According to Attorney General Dana Nessel, more than 12,000 consumer complaints rolled into the state’s Consumer Protection Team last year – covering everything from questionable used cars to internet service that seems powered by a hamster on a coffee break.
The AG’s office announced the numbers in a press release on March 3 as part of National Consumer Protection Week, highlighting the most common gripes from residents across the state.
The usual suspects lead the complaint parade.
The biggest category of complaints? Motor vehicles. No surprise there. Issues with used car dealers, repair shops, and rentals topped the list. Next came credit and financial concerns, including debt collection disputes, credit reporting problems, payday loans, and mortgage issues.
Rounding out the top complaints were problems with retail purchases, internet services, and personal service providers like gyms, dating services, and beauty companies. Housing complaints between landlords and tenants, issues with health providers, energy companies, contractors, and telecom services also made the list.
Nearly $2 million recovered for consumers.
Despite the long list of complaints, the Attorney General’s office says it managed to recover $1.88 million for consumers and businesses in 2025 through mediation, settlements, and refunds.
