GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) filed a civil rights complaint against Corewell Health on March 6 after a healthcare employee allegedly identified herself on social media as a “proud Islamophobe.”
The complaint, filed with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, alleges the employee posted messages expressing hostility toward Muslims and advocating discriminatory policies such as banning Islam and closing mosques.

In a press release from March 11, CAIR-MI also claims some posts disparaged other racial minority groups, raising broader concerns about bias from someone working in a healthcare setting.
Complaints allegedly ignored.
According to the complaint, concerns about the employee’s online activity were reported internally to Corewell Health over a two-year period. CAIR-MI alleges hospital leadership failed to take meaningful action despite multiple complaints.
The filing further claims that after one worker reported the issue, the hospital disclosed that person’s identity – sparking fears of retaliation and contributing to what the complaint describes as a hostile work environment.
Patient trust put under the microscope.
Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR-Michigan, said the situation raises serious concerns about patient trust.
“No patient should have to wonder whether the person responsible for their care harbors hatred toward their faith, and no employee should have to work alongside someone who proudly advertises bigotry against Muslims,” Walid said.
CAIR-MI says the workplace situation ultimately forced an employee to take leave because of fear and anxiety tied to the dispute.

The organization is asking the state to investigate whether Corewell Health violated Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, which prohibits religious discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in the workplace.
