Eckola added that the investigation is ongoing and that the MSP is working with the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). Eckola said that they will not be releasing further details at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

MDOC officials said in a statement to MyUpNow.com that Colton Wayne Mitchell, 36, died following “an altercation” in his cell. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

MDOC’s Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) website indicates Mitchell was serving a minimum 30-year sentence for first degree criminal sexual conduct. It also shows a previous 2-year sentence for second degree CSC involving a minor under 13 years old.

Michigan News Source contacted MDOC for additional information and but did not receive a response by press time.
