LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Lawmakers representing the Upper Peninsula want to establish a state veterans cemetery there so local veterans can be laid to rest closer to home.

State Reps. Dave Prestin (R-Cedar River), Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock) , and Karl Bohnak (R-Deerton) introduced House Bills 5843-5844 which support the measure.

“For too long, the surviving families of veterans have had to travel long distances to honor their loved ones,” said Prestin. He said the bills allow families to “maintain a stronger connection with those who sacrificed to defend our freedoms.”

The plan includes $5.7 million in state funding to support construction and operation of the proposed cemetery. A proposed feasibility study would determine the best location.

“There is still work to do, but this legislation creates a clear path forward to get this project moving and ensure U.P. veterans and their families receive the recognition and support they deserve,” said Markkanen.

In addition, the legislation creates a U.P. veterans cemetery fund to support future operational costs.

“Our veterans answered the call to serve this country, and we have a responsibility to honor that service,” Bohnak added.

The bills now sit in the House Appropriations Committee.
