HILLSDALE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Hillsdale College’s 174th commencement ceremony on May 9 featured all the usual graduation staples: caps, gowns, and lofty speeches about purpose and duty. But outside the campus gates, a few dozen protesters had gathered, accusing the college of promoting the wrong kind of education and protesting against the presence of a woman who was widowed in September 2025.

At the center of the controversy was keynote speaker Erika Kirk, who delivered the commencement address Saturday while also receiving an honorary degree alongside her late husband, Charlie Kirk.

Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA), a conservative student organization known for its outspoken activism on college campuses and its strong support for President Donald Trump. Kirk was shot and killed in September 2025 during a campaign event at a university in Utah, a tragedy that shocked conservatives nationwide and quickly turned him into a symbol for many on the political right who viewed him as a leading voice for young conservative activism.

Since Charlie’s death, Erika Kirk has stepped into a more public leadership role, continuing to promote many of the causes and organizations her husband championed, as she serves as CEO of the TPUSA organization. Supporters have praised her for carrying on his work during a period marked by both grief and intense political attention.

High and beautiful things.

Speaking to graduates, Erika Kirk encouraged students to pursue truth, defend liberty and live intentionally, echoing themes long associated with her husband and the conservative youth movement he built.

“As you continue forward in life, I want you to kind of embrace the similar blueprint of my husband,” Kirk told the graduating class, urging students to seek “high and beautiful things.”

Hillsdale President Larry Arnn praised Kirk during the ceremony, calling her “tough” and saying “a lost generation needs some help, and now it’s Erika’s job to help give it to them.”

The ceremony also included the conferral of degrees to 350 undergraduates and 38 graduate students, along with recognition of top academic achievers. Hillsdale College announced earlier this year that both Charlie and Erika Kirk would receive honorary Doctor of Public Service degrees during the school’s 2026 commencement ceremony. The honorary degrees were formally presented Saturday by Hillsdale President Larry Arnn, fulfilling a promise he first announced during Charlie Kirk’s memorial service.

Protesters call Hillsdale “dangerous.”

Not everyone was applauding though.

According to reports, including the Detroit Free Press, a few dozen demonstrators gathered near campus to protest Erika Kirk’s appearance, President Donald Trump, and Hillsdale College itself. Some criticized Turning Point USA’s political activism, while others argued the college promotes an overly conservative worldview and wields too much influence in both politics and education debates.

The protest also received an unexpected interruption from Mother Nature. Reports say lightning struck a large evergreen tree near the Hillsdale County Courthouse where demonstrators had gathered. No serious injuries were reported, but the dramatic moment quickly sparked reactions online, with some supporters joking that Charlie Kirk was “keeping an eye out for us” from above.

If protesters hoped the demonstration would pressure Hillsdale into toning down its image, they likely picked the wrong campus. While some colleges spend their time discussing trigger warnings and therapy puppies, Hillsdale appears perfectly comfortable doubling down on faith, patriotism and conservative activism – protesters or not.
