LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Hell, Michigan may have frozen over before, but now part of it is officially on the market.

The iconic tourist attraction known as the “Gateway to Hell” in Livingston County is up for sale for $625,000, giving buyers a chance to own the souvenir shop, wedding chapel, mini-golf course, ice cream parlor and more than seven acres of devilishly popular Michigan real estate.

Despite headlines suggesting otherwise, the entire community of Hell isn’t for sale – just the quirky slice of Hell that has been drawing curious visitors for decades. And local fans are hoping whoever buys it doesn’t turn their beloved slice of the underworld into something unrecognizable.

A devil of a deal.

Owner John Colone, who transformed Hell into a tourism hotspot after purchasing and expanding his Gateway to Hell attraction in 1998, says it’s time to retire. At 80 years old, it looks like he has decided he would rather enjoy some peace and quiet than spend eternity managing Hell.

Residents don’t want Hell to go to Hell.

Community members told local media they hope the next owner preserves the town’s unique character rather than paving over its devilish charm. After all, there aren’t many places where tourists proudly buy T-shirts proving they’ve “been to Hell and back.”

The good news? Hell, which is about 20 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, remains open for business while the search continues for its next ruler of part of the devil’s playground. The listing also notes the attraction has remained profitable, generating more than $327,000 in gross revenue in 2024.

For now, Michigan’s most famous punchline remains intact. But locals are making one thing clear: they don’t want the next owner to turn Hell into a hellhole.

Hell has a Pinckney address.

On a side note: Despite the name, the property isn’t technically located in a city called Hell. Hell is an unincorporated community within Putnam Township that uses a Pinckney mailing address and ZIP code. That’s why real estate listings show the property as being in Pinckney even though it’s home to the famous “Gateway to Hell” attractions. In other words, visitors may be headed to Hell, but the mail still goes to Pinckney.
