LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan voters won’t see a citizen-led proposal to eliminate the state’s property tax on the November 2026 ballot.

Organizers with Ax MI Tax said it fell short of the 446,198 signatures required to get on the November 2026 ballot. Karla Wagner, the organization’s founder and Independent candidate for governor, said the group needed close to 27,000 more signatures to put the Constitutional Amendment question on the ballot.

Wagner posted the update on Facebook, and expressed her appreciation to the volunteers. “Given the small number of people on our team of mostly unpaid volunteers, it is honestly remarkable how close we came,” Wagner wrote. “You are all rock stars and should be proud of your tireless effort. Simple gratitude cannot express how much respect and love I have for our team.”

In addition, Wagner added that her gubernatorial campaign will focus on property tax elimination.

Meanwhile, Michigan House Republicans proposed eliminating property taxes through a bill package. Eliminating property taxes is a goal of the bill package, along with making changes to how property taxes are reassessed, removing the statewide education tax on property, and replacing Michigan’s real estate transfer tax, among other things.
