FAYETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After months of packed meetings, heated testimony, and plenty of rural residents wondering whether their township was about to become one giant solar farm, the four Fayette Township Planning Commissioners participating in the vote unanimously denied a permit for the proposed Heartwood II solar project.

The project, proposed by Chicago-based Ranger Power, would convert approximately 1,400 acres of farmland into a solar energy facility, covering more than 20% of the township’s agricultural land with solar panels.

Residents weren’t buying the green sales pitch.

Opponents packed meetings for months, raising concerns about farmland loss, tree removal, emergency response plans, environmental impacts, and what they saw as a threat to the township’s rural character. Planning commissioners cited many of those concerns when rejecting the application. Commission Chair Jane Munson also noted that requests to scale down the project apparently went nowhere.

The vote reportedly drew a standing ovation from residents who have been fighting the project since it was first proposed.

The fat lady hasn’t sung yet.

Before solar opponents start planning a victory parade, there’s one significant catch. Under Michigan’s Public Act 233, Ranger Power can appeal directly to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), which has the authority to override local decisions on large-scale renewable energy projects.

Ranger Power has already signaled that it intends to continue pursuing the project and honoring agreements with participating landowners – including two members of the planning commission who signed lease agreements for the proposed solar development and didn’t vote on the issue.

So while Fayette Township just threw a sizable wrench into Heartwood II, the battle may simply be moving from the township hall to Lansing – where local control and state energy mandates are increasingly on a collision course.
