WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – M&M’s is celebrating its 85th anniversary this summer by removing brown and blue from its iconic candy colors.
The potential change from Parent company Mars comes nearly a year after the company announced it would begin offering naturally colored options.
The Wall Street Journal reported this week that new M&M’s made without artificial dyes will debut in August.
While the company can recreate red and yellow using natural ingredients such as turmeric and beets, natural dyes that can create blue and brown have proven more difficult to develop.
According to The Daily Beast, Mars aims to have red, yellow, orange, green, blue and brown M&M’s made with natural dyes by 2028.
Health advocates have long called for the removal of artificial dyes from foods. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has maintained that these dyes are safe, health advocates have cited studies showing the dyes can cause neurobehavioral problems, such as hyperactivity and attention issues, in some children.
