DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – General Motors is facing backlash after cutting more than 1,000 jobs at its flagship EV assembly plant and adding 50 robots to the production line.

The change at Detroit’s Factory Zero puts tensions between automakers and workers in the spotlight. On one hand, automakers are looking for greater efficiency and cost-cutting measures, while workers are looking to hold on to job security in the manufacturing sector.

Nationwide, companies are turning to robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve productivity, reduce costs, and streamline vehicle assembly operations.

Factory Zero has played a central role in GM’s electric vehicle strategy. It has produced the GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV. However, government subsidies under the Biden and Whitmer administrations could not sustain the EV market. Instead, the plant has experienced a series of temporary shutdowns and workforce reductions as EV demand has fluctuated.
