ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Embattled University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel will step down at the end of 2026.

Manuel’s exit comes amid an independent investigation into the culture of the athletic department, including the firing of former football coach Sherrone Moore and his years-long relationship with staffer Paige Shiver.

Despite the various scandals that have engulfed the university since Manuel took the helm in 2016, President Domenico Grasso issued a video statement praising Manuel’s “tireless work.”

Grasso added, “We have significant work ahead to restore Michigan athletics to its standing as a model program, not only on the field, but also off the field.”

Moore is only Manuel’s most recent controversy during his tenure. Manuel also led the athletic department when former Michigan co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss was fired and later indicted in March 2025 on computer hacking charges. Prosecutors allege Weiss accessed the personal accounts of more than 3,300 student-athletes to steal intimate photos and videos.

The Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal and the suspension of former head football coach Jim Harbaugh over recruiting violations also occurred under Manuel’s watch.
