WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democratic U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin is once again talking about “Planet 10.” No, it’s not a Marvel sequel, a UFO convention or the latest climate initiative. According to Slotkin, Planet 10 is an insider label for the roughly 10 Democratic U.S. senators who represent politically competitive red or purple states instead of reliably blue states like California or New York.
Speaking with Fox 2 Detroit’s Roop Raj at a June appearance at the Detroit Economic Club, Slotkin said the phrase came from a longtime Capitol Hill observer who told her she was struggling with legislation because she was “from Planet 10.”
What is Planet 10?
His explanation: while 37 Democratic senators come from deep-blue states, the other 10 have to govern and campaign in places where voters don’t all think alike. They have to represent independents, Republicans and Democrats, forcing them to approach problems differently.
Slotkin argued that Midwestern Democrats have developed a more practical brand of politics because they survive by winning crossover voters. She said she’s in the Senate only because some Michiganders voted for both Donald Trump and her on the same ballot, adding that success in swing states requires appealing to a broad coalition and governing for everyone, not just those who voted for you.
She even suggested ideas born in the Midwest can succeed on the coasts, while ideas “cooked up on the coast” don’t always translate to states like Michigan.
A 2028 audition?
The comments are likely to fuel more speculation about Slotkin’s national ambitions. While she hasn’t announced a 2028 presidential campaign, her Planet 10 argument sounds a lot like a campaign pitch. It suggests Democrats should stop taking political cues from their safest blue states and instead listen to the politicians who actually know how to win over swing voters.
Whether the rest of the Democratic Party is ready to relocate to Planet 10 is another question entirely.
