GRAND HAVEN TWP., Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Ottawa County officials are starting to piece together the events that led to a husband and father killing his wife, six children, and then himself in Grand Haven Township on Friday.

On Monday, officials confirmed that 47-year-old Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot his wife, 39-year-old Amanda Karolkiewicz, and his six children, set several intentional fires throughout the house, then turned the gun on himself. Officials said the murder weapon was a handgun they believe was registered.

Although officials are not releasing the names of the children, they released their ages: four biological boys, ages 15, 12, 11, and 5, and two adopted 11-year-old girls.

“These are difficult scenes to process,” said Capt. Jake Sparks during a Monday afternoon press conference. “We’re trying to get answers for the family and community, and the only way to do that is to do a fair and thorough investigation.”

Sparks said it is possible the shootings happened Thursday night, as the children were found in “numerous different bedrooms” throughout the house. He said investigators are poring over documentation left at the scene. The basement sustained the most fire damage, and several dogs and at least one cat also died.

Sparks would not confirm the couple’s employment and said he was not aware of any previous calls to the home.

The murder-suicide and the fire remain under investigation.
