DEARBORN, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Dearborn officials are preparing for another potentially contentious night at City Hall as anti-Islamic activist Jake Lang and other Americans are expected to descend on the Aug. 18 City Council meeting. Lang and other activists are planning to attend the meeting as part of their continuing campaign against what they describe as the “Islamification” of American communities and to confront Dearborn’s political leadership over the city’s direction. Needless to say, Dearborn officials aren’t preparing a welcome wagon.

Dearborn’s first Muslim Police Chief, Issa Shahin, says police have been coordinating with state and federal authorities and will have an enhanced police presence Tuesday.

Police Chief: stay home.

Shahin issued a direct appeal to Dearborn residents in a Facebook post saying, “We’re aware that individuals and groups from outside our community may come to the Dearborn City Council meeting Tuesday, August 18. We’ve been monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with our state and federal partners. We have a plan in place, and you’ll see an enhanced presence of police officers.”

Shahin goes on to say, “But here’s my direct ask of our residents: please stay home. These groups that are coming here are coming for one reason, and that’s to provoke a reaction and generate attention. If nobody shows up to react, they have nothing. The most powerful thing that this community can do is refuse to give them an audience. If you have business before council, you’re welcome, and you’ll be safe. We’ll make sure of it. But if you’re thinking about coming down just to confront these people, don’t. That’s exactly what they want, and it puts you at risk. Let our officers do their job. Don’t let a handful of hateful outsiders define who we are. Dearborn is stronger than this. Thank you.”

In other words, Dearborn residents are being advised to avoid the political fireworks while police prepare for the Americans coming to exercise their First Amendment rights.

Who is Jake Lang?

Lang is an activist, U.S. Senate candidate in Florida, and former Jan. 6 defendant who spent nearly four years in federal pretrial custody on charges related to the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot. He was never convicted. In January 2025, President Donald Trump’s mass action dismissed the pending charges against Lang and other defendants still awaiting trial while also pardoning those already convicted. Lang describes himself as MAGA and a former political prisoner.

Lang has been to City Hall before.

Since getting out of prison, Lang has gained national attention for organizing provocative demonstrations, including a November 2025 anti-Islam rally in Dearborn. During that visit, he marched through the city carrying a Quran and bacon, threatened to burn the Islamic holy book and taunted Muslim counter-protesters before taking his message to a City Council meeting. There, Lang argued that Muslim immigration was changing America and concluded his remarks by telling council members to “get the f*** out of our country.”
