DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – It’s “all aboard” for Amtrak routes across the country, thanks to a more than $2 billion federal grant.
The funds are earmarked for up to 43 new trainsets nationwide, including trains that will serve all three of Michigan’s passenger routes. Amtrak says the funding from the Federal Railroad Administration will help replace aging equipment and expand its fleet.
The new trains will serve Michigan’s Pere Marquette line, which connects Grand Rapids and Chicago; the Blue Water line, which runs between Chicago and Port Huron; and the Wolverine, which links Pontiac and Chicago.
The U.S. Department of Transportation says the new trains will increase seat availability and could lead to lower ticket costs.
In addition, Amtrak is receiving $659 million for a new Midwest Maintenance Facility and bridge and viaduct improvements in Chicago. Of that amount, up to $572 million will go toward the maintenance facility and up to $87 million will fund improvements to bridges, viaducts and related structures.
