KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan’s election clerks are the ones closest to the voter rolls. And some of them are increasingly making it clear they intend to protect the integrity of the voter rolls in the communities that they represent.

As questions continue swirling around the accuracy of Michigan’s Qualified Voter File (QVF), local election officials are speaking up about concerns with the voter rolls and calling for help to make sure they are accurate.

Pointing to recent whistleblower allegations that noncitizens are being registered to vote through Michigan’s Secretary of State system – a story Michigan News Source reported here – Climax Township Clerk Sarah DeBoer said Monday that she is joining other clerks across the state in calling for federal help. “I am joining with other clerks across the state of Michigan in calling for federal assistance in verifying the citizen status of those on our voter rolls,” DeBoer said on social media.

Hastings clerk wants answers too

Hastings Charter Township Clerk David Olson has also stepped into the election-integrity spotlight, calling for federal assistance to determine whether noncitizens are appearing on his voter rolls following allegations made by the whistleblower. He pointed out that once a person is in the QVF, he is not able to verify they are citizens and are issued a ballot.

Trust but verify

Michigan election officials routinely assure voters that the state’s elections are secure. The Michigan Department of State said after the Aug. 4 primary that voters could be confident the results reflected the will of the people. Local clerks like DeBoer and Olson appear to be adding another ingredient to that recipe: verify it anyway.
