WILLIAMSTON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State Police officials said a 12-year-old boy died and his 13-year-old sister was critically injured when an SUV struck them as they rode bicycles along Grand River Avenue between Williamston and Webberville on Saturday morning.

The crash happened near North Meech Road at about 11:35 a.m. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His sister was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Both children were wearing helmets.

Police identified the driver as a 64-year-old Williamston woman. She was traveling west when her SUV struck the children.

Officials said drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash. They have not said whether the woman will face charges.

Michigan law generally requires motorists passing a bicyclist traveling in the same direction to leave at least 3 feet of space. If that is impractical, drivers must pass at a safe distance and speed. Michigan law also allows drivers to cross into a no-passing zone to pass a bicyclist when it is safe to do so.

“Following traffic laws designed to protect everyone using our roadways can help prevent crashes and save lives,” said Lt. DuWayne Robinson, public information officer for the MSP Fifth District.

The crash remains under investigation.
