WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – Nearly one million Americans are slated to receive $500 refund checks beginning next month under a new Trump administration initiative returning excess fees collected through the federal Obamacare marketplace.
No, these checks aren’t like the never-seen tariff refunds or the DOGE dividend checks that generated plenty of headlines but never made it into Americans’ bank accounts.

President Donald Trump announced the “Working Families Obamacare Refunds” on Sept. 10, saying hundreds of millions of dollars collected through Affordable Care Act exchange user fees will be returned directly to consumers.
This is surplus money that will be returned due to “higher costs imposed by the Biden Administration’s gross mismanagement of Obamacare,” according to a White House fact sheet.
Who Gets the $500?
The refunds are targeted at people who purchased coverage through the federal exchange but did not receive premium assistance, meaning they paid the full cost of their insurance premiums.
Eligible consumers live in 30 states that use the federal exchange, including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Florida. Nearly one million people are expected to receive $500 each, with checks scheduled to begin going out in October.
