DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – A former high-ranking Iraqi intelligence officer who allegedly worked under Saddam Hussein has been arrested in Metro Detroit and is in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) announced the arrest of 70-year-old Raad Alanbagi on Sept. 13. Agents with HSI’s Detroit office tracked down and arrested Alanbagi after uncovering information allegedly tying him to Iraq’s intelligence service during Saddam’s rule.

“HSI continues to safeguard our communities and national security,” the agency said.

Other details surrounding Alanbagi’s arrest remain unknown, including when and how he entered the country, how long he had been living in the United States and his immigration status. Federal officials have also not disclosed whether he faces criminal charges, immigration proceedings or both.

Records obtained by New Media Detroit show Alanbagi was booked into the Calhoun County Correctional Facility in Battle Creek on Sept. 3, approximately 10 days before HSI publicly announced the arrest.

Saddam Hussein ruled Iraq from 1979 until 2003, when he was removed from power following the U.S.-led invasion. He was convicted by an Iraqi court and hanged on Dec. 30, 2006.
