ALLEGAN, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — A Chinese national linked to more than $1 million in alleged fraudulent gold and cash pickups across the U.S. is behind bars in Allegan County.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said Xiangbo Sun, 24, was in the country on a tourist visa. Investigators said records and cellphone data connect him to the alleged fraud. He faces one count of larceny by false pretenses involving $50,000 to $100,000. Officials have identified additional suspects but are withholding their names.

The investigation began in June after an elderly Allegan County resident reported losing nearly $500,000. According to investigators, she received a call in May from someone claiming to represent the Federal Trade Commission.

The caller asked about online purchases, told her she was a victim of identity theft and claimed to have personal information about her family. The caller also warned that her children’s identities could be stolen.

She was instructed to withdraw money from her retirement and savings accounts and hand it over to supposedly secure couriers.

By the time she contacted police, she had sent hundreds of thousands of dollars through wire transfers and checks. Couriers had also collected $237,000 in gold coins from her home.

Detectives arranged to be at the residence for a scheduled $60,000 cash pickup on June 18 and arrested Sun when he arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.

A Lyft driver told investigators he had driven Sun from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Allegan County and was supposed to take him to Gerald R. Ford International Airport afterward.

According to police, Sun said others had instructed him to collect the $60,000 in exchange for a small percentage of the money, then fly from Grand Rapids to New York.
