LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers early this morning, keeping Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat blue as Democrats swept into power nationally.
With 94% of Michigan votes counted, the Associated Press called the race for El-Sayed, who currently leads Rogers 52.3% to 45.7%.

El-Sayed, who will become the nation’s first Muslim U.S. senator, replaces retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.
In his victory speech, El-Sayed mockingly thanked AIPAC, which spent approximately $42 million trying to defeat him. He also celebrated his win with the Arabic phrase “alhamdulillah,” meaning “praise be to God.”
El-Sayed took a parting shot at his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, saying, “Enjoy your retirement.” He added, “You chose hate, and Michigan chose hope. May we never have to see the likes of you in this state again.”
Democrats Take the Senate
Democrats also flipped at least seven Republican-held Senate seats in Texas, Maine, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina and South Carolina.
With those victories, Democrats are projected to control at least 54 Senate seats, ending the Republicans’ 53-47 majority. Alaska’s Senate race remains undecided.
The results represent a major political setback for President Donald Trump and Republicans, who will enter 2027 facing a Democratic-controlled Congress.
