MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – More than one million visitors travel to Mackinac Island each year. Now, voters in the community of roughly 500 year-round residents have approved giving city officials greater control over ferry-related fees.

On Tuesday, Mackinac Island voters overwhelmingly approved a charter amendment allowing the city to approve or deny charges, including luggage and parking fees, according to unofficial results. The measure passed 465 to 42.

Ferries connect the island with St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. Most visitors arrive during the island’s main tourism season, May through October.

The island’s two passenger ferry operators, Shepler’s and Arnold Transit Company, are owned by Hoffmann Marine, part of the Hoffmann Family of Companies. City officials and the operators have disputed fares and additional fees in recent years.

The vote follows legislation signed June 3 by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer that allowed island voters to expand the city’s authority over ferry services.
