LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Michigan Democrats are pushing for the advancement of a bill that would make it illegal for paid circulators to lie to registered voters while collecting signatures for ballot initiatives.

There is currently no law prohibiting volunteer or paid circulators from lying to or misleading the public.

Senate Bill 0604 would hold a ballot committee responsible if an employed circulator or volunteer makes a false statement or misrepresents the contents, purpose or effect of a petition.

In addition, Senate Bill 0605 would allow voters to remove their name from a petition by filing a written request to do so until the day the petition is filed.

Other bills include prohibiting paying or hiring collectors based on certain conditions, and only counting a signature once if a registered voter signs more than once.
