ESCANABA, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The city of Escanaba is out a large chunk of money, and no one will be held accountable.

It lost almost $30,000 in January 2021.

The city received an email from a vendor it had worked with previously asking for the money.

That email had been hacked and traced to an IP address in Cape Town, South Africa and ultimately to an elderly woman in California linked to other scams.

No city employees were at fault and the case was closed due to the woman’s location and the logistics of getting other suspects back for possible prosecution.
