WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – Sea lampreys continue to be a problematic invasive species in the Great Lakes. In fact, one adult lamprey can kill 40 pounds of fish in its lifetime.
In an effort to stop a large spawning ground, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service recently poured a chemical into the Dead River in Marquette to kill sea lampreys.
Officials say the chemical will kill around 78,000 lamprey larvae.
As the treatment moves along the river, technicians plan to sample the water to ensure the chemical is at a safe and effective level.
