DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – As a decision looms in Detroit to help curb gun violence, the community is speaking out.

The Detroit City council could vote this week to spend $8.5 million to expand the ShotSpotter surveillance system in city which uses audio microphones to detect gunshots.

Most of the money would come from federal COVID relief funds.

The city uses the system in the 8th and 9th precincts, and Detroit Police data shows violent crimes overall are down in those precincts.

Opponents argue the money could be better spent on improving social services, housing resources, and anti-poverty measures.
