LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A recent article by the Detroit News pointed out that data from the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) shows that there were more deaths in Michigan in 2021 than births. The same thing happened in 2020 and it was reported to be the first time it occurred since at least 1900.

MDHHS data shows that there were 117,756 Michiganders who died in 2021 and only 105,022 babies born – for a difference of 12,734 lives.

While the Detroit News story outlines some reasons for this occurrence including the state’s aging population, not attracting new people to Michigan including immigrants and the COVID-19 pandemic, they totally ignore the abortion statistics in the state.

In 2021, MDHHS reports that 30,074 induced abortions occurred. Although these numbers aren’t counted in the death statistics by MDHHS, if you add the abortion numbers to the birth numbers above, Michigan would have more births than deaths if those abortions hadn’t happened.

With the passage of Proposal 3 codifying abortion rights into the Michigan constitution and a pro-choice governor, the abortions in Michigan are sure to rise and the trend of more deaths than births in Michigan will most likely continue.
