MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A pair of late-18th Century portraits depicting a former Fort Michilimackinac commander and his wife have made their way to Michigan.
Mackinac State Historic Parks announced it has purchased the 1790 portraits of Arent and Rebecca DePeyster from a London-based auction house.
DePeyster served as commandant at the colonial-era fort on the Straits of Mackinac from 1774 until 1779.
The portraits had descended through the DePeyster family until at least the end of the 20th Century.
The staff at Mackinac State Historic Parks had been aware of the existence of the portraits in recent decades, and acquiring them has been a long-term goal.
