Currently, the Great Lakes total ice cover is at 6%. The yearly average this time of year is roughly 40%.

The ice coverage per lake is currently 4.7% for Lake Superior, 7.3% for Lake Michigan, 10.6 % for Lake Huron, under 1% for Lake Erie and 1.6% for Lake Ontario.
With all of the open water still exposed, this allows for greater lake-effect snow, or rain for the remainder of this winter.
