DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Michael Lorenzen went five innings on Thursday afternoon recording four strikeouts as Detroit took game three over Oakland, 9-0. Earning his third win of the year, he allowed just three hits and no runs as the Detroit pitching staff recorded nine strikeouts in the four-hit shutout.

Lorenzen said after the game, “This felt good. I’ve been working a lot of pitching with two strikes, trying not to throw the ball down the middle, and that was good today.”

The first six batters of the game were retired by Lorenzen before Oakland recorded their first hit in the third inning. Oakland then had one hit in the fourth and fifth inning. Tyler Horton went two innings allowing no hits as Brendan White followed for an inning and Chasen Shreve pitched the ninth recording three strikeouts.

Javier Baez was 3-of-3 with two RBI and two runs scored as Jake Marisnick had two hits, one a home run, with two RBI. Kerry Carpenter also added two hits. Matt Vierling, Jonathan Schoop, and Eric Haase each had a RBI.

Detroit scored in six of the eight innings starting with two runs in the first inning. Baez started the game with a two-RBI single bringing in Spencer Torkelson and Andy Ibanez. Two more runs came in the third inning and then in the fourth inning Marisnick and Vierling each had a RBI. Baez scored in the fifth on a double play to make it 7-0 and then Marisnick had a 410-foot home run in the sixth for an eight-run lead. Haase finished off the scoring in the seventh with a single for the ninth run of the game.

Detroit will host Toronto at 6:40 p.m. on Friday night.
