WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – Two U.S. Congressional representatives, including Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing), plan to introduce legislation that would expand government reviews of real estate purchases by Chinese buyers and other foreign countries posing national security concerns.

Rep. Slotkin, along with Rep. Blake Moore (R-Utah) are proposing to expand the authority of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States over foreign real estate purchases.

“We’ve seen across the country some interest, particularly from China and Russia, in buying up land for either industrial use [or] agricultural use and we just wanted  to make sure that any purchase goes through the same national security review before we say yes,” Slotkin told WJR on Wednesday morning.

That interest from China has been lived-out in at least three communities in Michigan, and Slotkin should know. She signed a non-disclosure agreement to engage in closed-door discussion about China-based Gotion’s proposed battery factory in Big Rapids.

The community there has spent months voicing concerns about the Chinese Communist Party being in their backyard. Most recently, Green Charter Township sought a preliminary and permanent injunction against Mecosta County and its Planning Commission to halt construction of the Gotion plant.

In addition, the Democrat has been lock-step with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer who has not been shy about using taxpayer money to fund such projects as Gotion and CATL in Marshall. Recently, Whitmer traveled to Taiwan and South Korea to make business deals there.

She traveled with representatives from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which has also handed out taxpayer funded incentives to megasite projects in the state.
