ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Rivalry games are always fun. Michigan and Michigan State battle every year on the ice for bragging rights of who is the best in the State of Michigan. Headed into the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship with a Frozen Four bid on the line, Michigan had only defeated the Spartans once in five tries this year. That all changed in St. Louis.

Michigan, ranked 10th in the nation, upset no. 4 Michigan State, 5-2, in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship. What made it even better is it was the program’s 1,800th victory and 59th in the NCAA Tournament. The 5-2 win propelled Michigan to an NCAA Record 28th time advancing to the Frozen Four.

Michigan State opened with a 1-0 lead in the first period but Michigan’s Ethan Edwards tied the game in the second period at 5:41. He finished the game with three points adding two assists on to other Wolverine goals. Marshall Warren put Michigan in front, 2-1, in the third period at 6:29 but four minutes later MSU tied it at two. After a two-minute lull of no scoring from either team, Michigan collected three goals in five minutes with two coming in back-to-back fashion with a 12-second differential.

Dylan Duke hit the go-ahead goal at 12:42 and Gavin Brindley made it 4-2 12-seconds later. Dylan netted the final goal at 17:41 for the 5-2 victory. Duke went on to be named the Most Outstanding Player of the Game with his two goals and one assist.

Michigan will now face Boston College on Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. (central) at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. BC is the no. 1 ranked team in the nation.
