WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Congressman Tom Barrett (R) hasn’t forgotten his Army roots, or those who served alongside him, after being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives last November.

The first year congressman joined other veteran colleagues on the hill last week to wash the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Barrett described the task as an honor to those who paid the ultimate price for freedom.

“It was a deeply moving experience to see the names etched in stone, each one a reminder of a life given in service to our country,” Barrett said.

While Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer with parades, barbeques, and trips up north, Congressman Barrett said those celebrations happen alongside a “solemn day of remembrance” for the men and women who gave up their lives for the freedom of the nation.

“I’ve served alongside heroes who never made it home,” Barrett said. “On Memorial Day, we honor them. May we always be a nation worthy of their sacrifice.”
