LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Nine members of the Michigan State Police (MSP) completed a rigorous 10-week training program which now makes them members of the department’s elite Emergency Support Team (ES Team).

“Our ES Team is called upon in some of the most high-risk and challenging situations police officers face,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “I have the utmost respect for the training they committed to and completed, as well as their desire to serve on this highly specialized team that handles the most dangerous of situations.”

This graduating class bumps the number of ES Team members to 57; that number includes tactical officers and negotiators.

The need for such officers is evident. In 2024, the team responded to more than 450 incidents statewide. Calls included high-risk arrest, search warrant service, hostage rescue, and responding to barricaded or armed individuals.

The ES team, formed in 1974, has responded to 4,500 calls for service.
