ROME, Italy (Michigan News Source) – A new pope is leading the Catholic Church.

On Thursday, the conclave named Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church; he is taking the name Pope Leo XIV. It marks an historic election as it is the first time an American has ascended to the papacy in the Church’s 2,000-year history.

The 69-year-old papal leader is a member of the Order of St. Augustine and has a background in missionary work. He’s also held significant roles in the Vatican.

His election followed the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025.
