EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State University (MSU) reached a $2.45 million settlement with the final survivor of the Feb. 13. 2023 mass shooting on campus.

The severe injuries Hanyang Tao sustained in the shooting led to ongoing significant physical and psychological trauma. The State News, reports a bullet injured Tao’s spine while he tried to escape Berkey Hall. Bullet fragments remain lodged in his back.

In addition, Tao’s legal action against MSU alleged negligence on the part of the university, including its failure to address safety concerns, add appropriate security measures, and maintain an effective emergency notification system.

The MSU mass shooting resulted in the deaths of students Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraser, and Alexandria Verner. In December 2023, their families reached a $15 million settlement with the university. The shooter was not connected with MSU and killed himself after the shooting spree.

Other settlements with shooting survivors include a $14.25 million agreement with Nate Statly, $13 million for Yukai “John” Hao, and $2.5 million for Troy Forbush. Another survivor received a $50,000 settlement in May.

In response to the tragedy, the MSU Board of Trustees has approved the design and initiation of construction for a memorial dedicated to the victims.
