LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Houghton and Ontonagon counties after extreme rainfall pummeled the area last month.
The rain caused widespread flooding which severely damaged roads and infrastructure. Whitmer said local resources deployed after the rain proved sufficient at the time, but now it is apparent the region needs additional resources to recover.

“Michiganders in Houghton and Ontonagon were hit hard by extreme rain and are facing significant disruptions to their daily lives and major damage to their roads and infrastructure,” said Governor Whitmer. “By declaring a state of emergency, we’re going to ensure every state resource is available to help them in their recovery efforts. We will work alongside local teams and get through this together.”
The state of emergency means all state resources are available to Houghton and Ontonagon Counties to help local efforts.
