LOWELL, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The City of Lowell wants residents to be on the lookout for an email scam targeting people waiting on property permits and rezoning requests.

The email appears to come from City Manager Michael Burns but it uses “usa.com” as part of the email address. All official City of Lowell emails end with “ci.lowell.mi.us.”

In addition, the email appears legitimate since it provides property details. An approval fee request is made in order for the paperwork to move forward. Then, it asks for the payment receipt to be emailed to the sender for confirmation and documentation purposes.

“We want the community to know this is not a legitimate request from the City of Lowell,” Burns said. “It is unfortunate someone is using online information we are required by law to make public to target community members in a malicious way.

Anyone who receives an email like this should not click on links, open attachments, or send money. Contact the City of Lowell at 616.897.8457 during business hours, and then delete the email, and report it as spam.
