LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – There’s nothing fake about Mackinac Island’s charm, but a Texas-based company is in trouble for allegedly running websites that tricked tourists into buying fake tickets for the island’s attractions.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office issued a cease and desist notice to MTVRS, LLC this week and told the company to take down or change websites by Oct. 6  Nessel’s office says the company will face a lawsuit seeking an injunction and fines under the Michigan Consumer Protection Act if they don’t comply.

The AG’s office says the MTVRS website fortmackinactickets.com “mimics the official website that sells Fort Mackinac tickets, which are sold by a governmental agency responsible for park preservation on mackinacparks.com.” The company is also accused of using a misleading logo and charging marked-up prices.

In addition, the website mackinacticketing.com allegedly misleads people purchasing ferry tickets and creates the impression that they are buying said tickets directly from Shepler’s Ferry.

Operators of Fort Mackinac and Shepler’s Ferry reported multiple incidents this month, saying visitors arrived with an email confirmation of purchase from MTVRS, but those emails and tickets were invalid.

“Mackinac Island welcomes more than a million visitors each year, and they deserve to know that the tickets they purchase online will get them onto the ferry and into popular attractions,” Nessel said in a press release. “My office remains committed to pursuing bad actors who attempt to take advantage of Michigan residents and visitors.”
