LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A fire department in northern Michigan will soon have a new aerial platform fire truck.
State Rep. Parker Fairbairn (R-Harbor Springs) said he secured $1 million in the newly signed state budget for the Charlevoix Township Fire Department ‘s new truck.

“When I came to Lansing, I committed to representing the best interests of our district and its communities in policy and appropriations,” said Fairbairn. “This purchase will measurably enhance local and regional fire protection capabilities, reducing loss of lives, homes, businesses and other important property and assets in Charlevoix County.”
The Charlevoix Township Fire Department’s current aerial platform fire truck is more than 30 years old. Because of its age, it requires frequent and costly maintenance, which often renders it unavailable.
“Our current platform truck is out of service for repairs more often than it is available for use,” said Dan Thorp, Charlevoix Township Fire Chief. Thorp referenced a fire situation earlier in the week where a working aerial truck would have helped his crew. “Acquiring a new, modern replacement is essential to our being able to provide the level of protection that the communities we serve need and deserve.”
The Charlevoix Township Fire Department services a 50 square mile area. It’s made up of Charlevoix, Hayes, and Marion Townships, along with portions of Norwood and Eveline Townships. It also services the City of Charlevoix.
The department also helps the neighboring communities of East Jordan, Boyne City, and Petoskey.
