LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the season alarms for black bears are set; as they wake up, residents should take safety precautions.

According to the Michigan DNR, a recent study indicates more than 12,000 new cubs were born this season. That means mothers and their cubs will soon be active in both wooded and residential areas.

Anyone who encounters a bear near their home or property should make loud noises. That could include yelling or banging pots together. Doing so from a safe distance will encourage the bears to move along.

In addition, wildlife experts say residents should remove bird feeders and bring pet food inside. Using bear-resistant garbage cans and keeping grills and patio furniture clean will also keep the bears away.
