LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is expected to unveil her goals for the 2023 budget on Wednesday.
Among those goals is an $18 billion investment in K-12 funding. That includes a 5 percent increase in per-pupil funding.

If approved, it would take the current $8700 in this fiscal year to more than $9100 next year.
Under the breakdown, $2.3 billion would go toward teacher and staff retention with an annual bonus of $2,000 going to all K-12 full time employees starting in the fall.
That means they could earn up to $9,000 over the course of four years if they stay with a district or the profession.
In addition, the proposal earmarks $360 million dollars for mental health expansion in schools including adding more clinics, more mental health screenings and more mental health professionals in school buildings.
