YPSILANTI, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Ypsilanti Police Department is in turmoil.
A mass exodus of five officers and the chief have left the department short-staffed in recent weeks.
The department is down 21% of its uniformed police force due to low morale, and officials say that stems from excessive overtime because the department is understaffed.
According to FBI crime statistics, violent crime is up 89% in Ypsilanti.
City officials say they are working on recruiting to fill seven vacant positions.
