According to Trustee Dennis Denno, the search committee for MSU’s 22nd president includes a cross-section of the university community and will be “reflective of the diverse voices and perspectives of those who care about Michigan State University.”

The board named Teresa Woodruff as interim president last October while then President Samuel Stanley, Jr. was still at the helm. He had given his 90 day notice several weeks prior.

Before that, Lou Anna K. Simon served as president while MSU faced ongoing problems stemming from the school’s coverup of former disgraced and imprisoned sports doctor Larry Nassar. She was ousted in 2018 and faced charges of lying to investigators amid the Nassar scandal. A judge dismissed those criminal charges.

Former Gov. John Engler stepped in during that time and the university pledged to change the culture at MSU following Nassar’s trial. Engler eventually resigned under pressure for his handling of the Nassar fallout, including repeated insensitive comments about Nassar’s victims.
