LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – One Lansing lawmaker is leading the charge to protect female athletes and make sure they have a fair playing field in Michigan.

Rep. Jaime Green (R-Richmond) introduced legislation designed to protect athletes in Michigan from facing the same unfair circumstances as Riley Gaines. She is a former All-American NCAA swimmer forced to compete in the 2022 Women’s Swimming National Championships against Lia Thomas, a male who calls himself a female.

House Bill 4546 would create the Female Athletics Integrity of Records (FAIR) Act. It would require awards, rankings, and records of sporting events to be categorized consistently with each competitor’s biological sex. The requirement would apply to any publicly funded event for which there are separate female and male competitions.

Rep. Green told The Steve Gruber Show this week, “I wrote [this legislation] to protect biological women because I’m tired of our girls being sidelined. I have a young teenage daughter. I want to protect them,” Green said.

In addition, Green emphasized that women have worked hard for many decades to put Title IX protections in place so they could have equal opportunities to compete. She said that allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports essentially reduces women to second-class status.

“No matter how much you transition, males will always be XY,” Green said. “[The ‘Y’ means] you have a different physiological makeup that you cannot change no matter how many hormones you take.”
