With pandemic-era school meal rules expired, debt in Michigan public schools skyrocketed in 2022.

For example, Ann Arbor has a student meal debt of almost $67,000.

State lawmakers are now considering a line item in the budget that would send $160 million to public schools to make meals free once again for every child.

If passed, the state would also use federal funds to fully fund the initiative.
