SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians announced this week that they intend to appeal a ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Maloney related to fishing rights.

In August, Judge Maloney issued his opinion approving the 2023 Great Lakes Decree, which would regulate all 1836 Treaty Tribes’ fishing rights for the next 24 years.

The tribe stated they are, “deeply disappointed in the court’s order which restricts our rights as a sovereign nation and affects the livelihood of our citizens.”

They plan to file their notice to the United States Court of Appeals by the October 23 deadline.
